Focus on the overall dietary pattern
Dietary Guidelines emphasize nutrient-dense foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, protein foods and appropriate dairy or alternatives while limiting excess added sugars, saturated fat and sodium.
Nutrients work together
Vitamins, minerals, protein, fats and carbohydrates support many systems. Research sometimes links dietary patterns or individual nutrients with respiratory outcomes, but observational associations do not prove that a supplement will treat disease.
When supplements may have a role
Supplements can help address a documented nutrient gap or specific need, but more is not always better. Some nutrients can cause harm at high doses or interact with medicines.
Practical food-first habits
Build meals around varied minimally processed foods, maintain adequate protein and fluids, and personalize the plan for allergies, medical conditions and clinician advice.
